Activities in El Chalten

Explore El Chalten and discover why it holds the unofficial title of Argentina’s National Trekking Capital.   This tiny mountain town is coolly isolated in western Patagonia near the Chilean border.  The history of this town is unique in that it was created for the purpose of securing the border against Chile in 1985.  Today the only reason for its existence is tourism.  It sits at the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy, mountains that have become popular for climbing.  It is for this reason that the El Chalten has become a destination for hikers and climbers.  It is also near Torre Glacier, Laguna Capri, Piedras Blancas Glacier, Chorillo del Salto, and Laguna de los Tres.  However, Parque Nacional Los Glaciares is El Chatlen’s primary attraction deemed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.  Though remote and isolated there are a number of things you can do in El Chalten so without further ado are the following top 3 activities to do in this majestic mountain town.

Marvel at Los Glaciares National Park

As I mentioned, this is the primary reason to go to El Chalten, as it is an area of exceptional natural beauty, with rugged towering mountains and numerous glacial lakes.  At the far end of the park three glaciers meet to dump their effluvia into the lake creating large massive icebergs which crash into the lake in a thunderous manner.  It is considered by some the best place to see glaciers in action.  The activity is concentrated around two main lakes, Argentino and Viedma.  It’s one of the only places in the world where glaciers are actually advancing.
